You do not need to renovate. Most home safety changes are cheap, quick and reversible: a light, a rail, a rug removed, a phone moved within reach.

Walk through the house with this list, room by room. Fix what you can today and note what needs a tradesperson or an occupational therapy assessment.

Ask for a proper assessment

An occupational therapist can assess the home and recommend equipment and modifications. Ask your GP for a referral, or ask My Aged Care about an assessment. Some equipment may be subsidised or funded.

If you are an NDIS participant, ask your support coordinator or plan manager whether home modifications can be funded.

Do not wait for a fall

The best time to fix the bathroom is before someone needs it. A rail costs far less than a hip fracture and a hospital stay.

Common questions

Who can install grab rails?

A qualified handyperson or builder, depending on the wall. Some providers specialise in aged care modifications.

Can I get financial help for modifications?

Ask My Aged Care, your NDIS plan manager or your GP about community programs. Eligibility varies.

Are night lights really necessary?

Yes. Many falls happen on the way to the bathroom in the dark.

What if the person refuses changes?

Start with the least intrusive: a night light, a mat, a rail. Explain the reason and let them choose.

Should I remove all rugs?

Only the ones that slide or curl. A familiar rug can be a comfort. Secure it instead.
