Support at Home is the Australian Government's aged care program for help at home. It is replacing Home Care Packages over time. The idea is simple: assess what you need, then fund a package of support so you can stay in your own home for longer.
The short version
- Support at Home is the government's home care program for older Australians.
- It is replacing Home Care Packages over time, with different rules.
- The first step is an assessment through My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.
- You may contribute to the cost, depending on your income and assessment.
What it is
Support at Home funds services that help older Australians live safely at home. That can include personal care, domestic help, meals, transport, nursing and allied health, depending on what the assessment says you need.
It is not a cash payment. The funding is managed through an approved provider, who delivers the services and claims the subsidy. You choose the provider where you can.
Who it is for
Older Australians who need help with daily living because of age, illness, disability or a change in circumstances. The assessment decides the level of support, not a diagnosis alone. If you are managing but a bad week would tip you over, that is worth discussing.
How to start
- Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422, or ask your GP to refer you.
- Complete the initial conversation about your needs and circumstances.
- Book an assessment. It usually happens at home, with a trained assessor.
- Receive the outcome and, if approved, choose a provider and agree a care plan.
The timing varies. Ask My Aged Care what the current wait looks like for your situation, and ask for the answer in writing if you can.
What it costs
The government sets contribution rules based on your income and the services you receive. Some people pay a contribution, some pay more, and the amount is explained through the assessment process. Ask for the figure before you agree to a service.
Provider prices can also vary for the same service. Ask for the fee schedule in writing, including any administration or care management charge.
What we can do
We are a private home care provider. If you are exploring Support at Home, ask us what applies to your situation. We will explain how our services fit alongside the program and tell you honestly what we can deliver. We do not decide eligibility and we do not promise a government contribution.
Five questions for My Aged Care
What am I being assessed for? How long does the process usually take? What will I pay? Can I choose my provider? What happens if my needs change? Write the answers down. The system is easier to navigate with a record.
