The short answer

If the risk is at night, visiting care is not enough.

Visiting care suits people who are safe alone for stretches and need help with specific tasks. Live-in or overnight care suits people who cannot be left, or whose carer cannot keep doing nights.

Live-in arrangements vary. Ask how sleep, breaks and handover are handled.

What visiting care can cover

Morning personal care, a meal, a clean, a lift, a medication prompt, a welfare check. If the person is safe between visits, this is efficient and affordable. Most home care is visiting care.

The gap is the hours between visits. If something happens at 2am, nobody is there.

What live-in care actually means

Live-in care is not usually one person awake for 24 hours. It is a roster: a worker who sleeps at the house and responds at night, plus daytime hours, with breaks and handovers. True 24-hour awake care needs multiple workers and costs accordingly.

Ask exactly what the night arrangement is. A sleepover and an awake night shift are different products with different prices and different safety profiles.

The questions that decide it

  • Can the person get to the bathroom alone at night?
  • Is there a falls risk, and how high?
  • Does the person leave the house or become confused at night?
  • Is the family carer sleeping?
  • Is there a spare room?
  • What does the funding cover?

The middle option

Overnight support two or three nights a week is often the practical compromise. It protects the carer's sleep without paying for full-time live-in care. Many families start there and adjust.

Do not buy live-in care for loneliness alone

If the need is company rather than safety, a day program, a regular visitor or a few hours of social support is better value and better for the person. Live-in care is for supervision and safety, not entertainment.

Common questions

Is live-in care cheaper than 24-hour visiting care?

Usually, because the worker has sleep periods and the arrangement is a block rather than hourly shifts. Ask for the full cost including breaks and handover.

Does the carer need their own room?

Yes, for a sleepover arrangement. A private bed and access to a bathroom are the minimum.

Can live-in care include nursing?

Only if the worker is a nurse and the task is in scope. Do not assume a live-in carer can provide clinical care.

What if we only need a few nights?

Overnight support is available on a scheduled basis. You do not have to commit to live-in care.

How do we trial it?

Book one or two nights and review. A trial tells you more than any brochure.
