Caring has a financial cost: reduced hours, extra travel, higher bills, equipment, and sometimes leaving work entirely. Some of that cost is offset by payments and entitlements, but only if you apply.

Carer Payment

An income support payment for people who cannot work because of the demands of caring. It is income and assets tested, and the person you care for must meet the care needs criteria.

Carer Allowance

A smaller payment for people who provide daily care. It is income tested, and it can sometimes be paid alongside Carer Payment.

Both are administered by Services Australia. Apply even if you think you might not qualify. The assessment is based on your circumstances, not your guess.

Carer's leave

Many employees have an entitlement to unpaid carer's leave, and some have paid leave under an award or agreement. Check your contract and your award. The Fair Work Ombudsman has plain-language guidance.

Tax and super

If you reduce your work hours, your super contributions fall too. That is a long-term cost that rarely gets counted. Ask a financial adviser or the ATO about your situation before making a permanent change.

Some care-related expenses may be tax deductible if they relate to your work, but personal care costs generally are not. Check before claiming.

Other support

  • Carer Gateway for counselling, peer support, emergency respite and planning.
  • Centrelink for payments, health care cards and concession cards.
  • State concessions for rates, utilities and transport.
  • Charities and community organisations for one-off help with bills or equipment.

How to apply without losing a day

Gather the documents first: identification, income details, medical reports, and the care needs assessment. Then call and ask for the specific form and the current processing time.

Keep a copy of everything. Note the date, the person you spoke to and the reference number.

Ask for help with the forms

A social worker, Carer Gateway or a community legal centre can help you complete the application. It is not a sign of failure. The forms are designed for people who do them often.

If you are refused

Ask for the decision in writing and the reason. You can usually ask for a review. Do it within the deadline, and include any missing evidence.

Common questions

Can I get Carer Payment and Carer Allowance at the same time?

Sometimes. Eligibility depends on your circumstances and the care needs of the person you care for.

Does Carer Payment affect my partner's income?

It is income and assets tested, so a partner's income can affect it. Ask Services Australia.

Can I work while receiving Carer Payment?

There are rules about work and income. Ask Services Australia before you start.

Is carer's leave paid?

It depends on your award or agreement. Some employers offer paid carer's leave.

Where can I get help applying?

Carer Gateway, a social worker, or a community legal centre.
