The short answer

Support at Home is the newer program. Home Care Packages are being replaced over time.

If you are already on a Home Care Package, ask your provider what the transition means for you. If you are starting now, ask My Aged Care which program applies. Do not rely on a blog, including this one, for the current rules. They change.

A high-level comparison only. Program rules and timing have changed repeatedly. Verify before acting.

Why this page does not list dollar figures

Because the figures change, and a stale number is worse than no number. Contribution rates, package levels and transition dates have all been revised. A page quoting last year's rules can cost a family real money.

The reliable sources are My Aged Care and the Department of Health. Call 1800 200 422 and ask for the current position in writing.

What stays the same

You still need an assessment. You still choose a provider where you can. You still pay a contribution that depends on your income. You still need to read the fee schedule and the care plan before you sign.

The practical experience of receiving care at home is similar under both programs: a provider, a care plan, a roster and an invoice.

What to ask your provider

  • Which program am I funded under right now?
  • What is my current budget, and what is left?
  • What are your hourly rates for each service?
  • What are your case management and administration charges?
  • What happens to my package when the transition happens?
  • Can I keep the same carer?

What to ask My Aged Care

What am I assessed for? How long is the wait? What will I contribute? Can I choose my provider? What happens if my needs change? Write the answers down with the date and the name of the person you spoke to.

A safe rule

If a provider tells you the rules confidently and cannot point to a government source, check it yourself. That includes us.

Common questions

Is Support at Home running now?

It is being introduced over time. Ask My Aged Care for the current position in your area and for your circumstances.

Will I lose my Home Care Package?

Existing packages are transitioning under arrangements set by the government. Ask your provider for a written explanation of what applies to you.

Do the fees change?

Contribution arrangements differ between the programs. Ask for your estimated contribution before you agree to services.

Can I change providers during the transition?

Generally yes. Ask both providers about exit fees and records transfer.

Where do I get the current rules?

myagedcare.gov.au and the Department of Health website. Call 1800 200 422 for your own situation.
